Economists Andreu Mas-Colell (Barcelona, 1944) and Hugo Sonnenschein (New York, 1940) share the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in Economics, Finance and Management for extending the reach and applicability of general equilibrium analysis and for establishing the modern theory of aggregate demand. According to the jury’s citation, their work has helped achieve better models for the overall behavior of the economy, and particularly to interpret and empirically measure consumer behavior.

The book La protección de la familia en la Unión Europea: análisis comparado y simulación de reformas aplicadas a España takes an in-depth look at family support policies in Spain and other European countries. The authors also use microsimulation techniques to evaluate tax reform proposals with a bearing on the family in the realms of direct and indirect taxation. Finally, the concluding section offers a simulation of the distributive and welfare effects of reducing VAT on children’s items.
