Award Announcement
- 2009 BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in the Ecology and Conservation Biology category
- The 2009 BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in the Ecology and Conservation Biology category goes to plant ecologist Peter B. Reich (New York, 1953) for work that “radically improves our understanding of and ability to predict terrestrial ecosystem compositional and functional responses to global environmental change”, including climate change and biodiversity loss.

- German physicist and mathematician Klaus Hasselmann (Hamburg, 1931) wins the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in the Climate Change category for developing methods which established that recent global warming trends are primarily attributable to human activities.

Global Change Expedition
- Malaspina Expedition 2010
- The BBVA Foundation takes part in the biggest global change expedition of all time. Over 400 researchers will work on this project coordinated by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).

- Traveling microorganisms
- A BBVA Foundation research project is first to identify the bacteria blown in daily from the Sahara Desert; a “migration” that intensifies in summer and with the progress of climate change.

- Global Loss of Coastal Habitats: Rates, Causes and Consequences
- Coastal habitats are key ecosystems in terms of their role in supporting marine biodiversity and the functions they deliver to society, which include shoreline protection, carbon burial and their role as a nursery for living resources. This volume sets out to increase awareness about the damage being done to coastal ecosystems by providing detailed analyses, global in scope, of the rates of loss, and their causes and consequences, for individual types of habitats.
