Award Announcement
- 2009 BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in the Ecology and Conservation Biology category
- The 2009 BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in the Ecology and Conservation Biology category goes to plant ecologist Peter B. Reich (New York, 1953) for work that “radically improves our understanding of and ability to predict terrestrial ecosystem compositional and functional responses to global environmental change”, including climate change and biodiversity loss.

- German physicist and mathematician Klaus Hasselmann (Hamburg, 1931) wins the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in the Climate Change category for developing methods which established that recent global warming trends are primarily attributable to human activities.

- Researchers at a colloquium held in the BBVA Foundation call for international legislation to safeguard the oceans and the services they provide as carbon sinks, a storehouse of food and genetic resources, and a shield against coastal erosion and flooding.
Study
- Effects of marine noise pollution on cetaceans
- A research project supported by the BBVA Foundation and led by Michel André, director of the Laboratory of Applied Bioacoustics at the UPC (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya) has developed the world’s first portable system for measuring cetacean hearing sensitivity. This audiogram measurement system facilitates in situ diagnosis of cetacean hearing loss, allowing assessments to be run on the survival chances of stranded animals without having to transport them to a laboratory.

- Global Loss of Coastal Habitats: Rates, Causes and Consequences
- Coastal habitats are key ecosystems in terms of their role in supporting marine biodiversity and the functions they deliver to society, which include shoreline protection, carbon burial and their role as a nursery for living resources. This volume sets out to increase awareness about the damage being done to coastal ecosystems by providing detailed analyses, global in scope, of the rates of loss, and their causes and consequences, for individual types of habitats.
